The meaning of Youth Day is rooted in the 1976 Soweto Uprising, when thousands of high school students courageously protested against the enforcement of Afrikaans as the medium of instruction in schools. These young people took a stand against inequality in education, and many paid the ultimate price for their bravery. This became a turning point in the struggle against apartheid, shining a global spotlight on the injustices of the regime. This united communities in the fight for freedom.
